BIOMARKERS OF INHERITED DISEASES IN ANIMALS
Presented by Dr. Osamu Yamato, DVM, PhD
Professor, Kagoshima University, Japan
Laboratory of Clinical Pathology, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine
Several inherited diseases affect domestic animal species and present diagnostic challenges. This webinar will cover a wide range of inherited diseases, primarily in dogs, cats, and cattle, and the biomarkers available for making a clinical (laboratory) diagnosis. Biomarkers that will be discussed include leukocyte inclusions, magnetic resonance imaging, and urine derivatives analyzed by GC-MS. Inherited diseases will include lysosomal storage diseases such as gangliosidosis, mucopolysaccharidosis, and neuronal ceroid-lipofuscinosis; erythrocyte enzymopathies such as pyruvate kinase deficiency; immune disorders such as trapped neutrophil syndrome; coagulopathies such as hemophilia; and other inborn errors of metabolism.
ISACP WEBINAR SERIES: ACUTE PHASE REACTANTS IN ZOO AND WILDLIFE SPECIES
Lecture 1: Introduction to APP and Applications in Zoo and Wildlife Species
April 18, 2023, 1:00PM EDT/7:00PM SAST
Carolyn Cray, Ph.D.
Clinical Professor of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Microbiology & Immunology
Chief, Division of Comparative Pathology
Director, Avian & Wildlife Laboratory
Director, Acute Phase Protein Laboratory
University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, Miami, Florida USA
This webinar will serve as a primer to acute phase proteins (who, what, where, why) and the demonstrated utility in companion and large animals. Applications in zoo and wildlife species – both specific and overarching will also be presented.

Faculty of Veterinary Science
University of Pretoria, South Africa
The second webinar in this 2-part series will explore the methodology and assays currently available for measurement of APRs in zoo and wildlife species: albumin, serum iron, C-reactive protein, haptoglobin, serum amyloid A and electrophoresis. The importance of assay validation will be discussed, with some practical examples. Other topics will include species differences, and determination of reference intervals and diagnostic utility.
THE ROLE OF HAEMOSTASIS IN THE PATHOGENESIS OF DISEASE
February 7, 2023
Presented by Prof. Amelia Goddard, BVSc(Hons), MMedVet, PhD
Faculty of Veterinary Science, University of Pretoria, South Africa
This webinar will examine the mechanisms and implications of aberrant haemostasis in inflammation and cancer. Topics include: coagulation activation during the acute inflammatory response; the role of platelets in linking haemostasis, inflammation, and tissue injury; platelets as mediators of cellular communication; tumor expression of tissue factor; and mechanisms of coagulation-dependent metastasis. Disease examples will include acute babesiosis in dogs, canine parvovirus enteritis, African horse sickness, as well as carcinoma and sarcoma in dogs.
